Gingivitis and Periodontitis – Can Gum Disease Be Cured?
Gum disease isn’t curable but it can be stopped and the bone and tissue around teeth rebuilt. Brush and floss regularly, and quit habits that damage gums such as smoking. Eat a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates. Schedule regular cleanings with a dental professional to remove plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease.
The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, a mild form of the condition that causes swollen and red gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to the more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis, which destroys the tooth-supporting bone. Gingivitis and the inflammation caused by it can also raise your risk for serious health conditions like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis.
“The Role of a Dental Hygienist in Maintaining Your Oral Health
If you notice any of the early warning signs of gum disease — bad breath that doesn’t go away, gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing or eating, crooked teeth or loose teeth, and teeth that seem to shift in your mouth — see your dentist right away. With prompt treatment, you can reverse the effects of gingivitis, protect your health and preserve your teeth.
Unfortunately, if you let gum disease progress to the advanced stages of periodontitis, it can’t be completely reversed. Several types of surgery are available to treat the damaged tissue and bone, and restore the health of your teeth. These include bone and soft tissue grafts, which use fragments of your own or synthetic bone to replace the damaged bone; gum flap surgery to expose more of the root surface to help heal the tissue; and other techniques that reduce inflammation and encourage your body to repair the damaged tissues and bones.
